Earth Strike: Star Carrier: Book One

The first book in the epic saga of humankind's war of transcendence

There is a milestone in the evolution of every sentient race, a Tech Singularity Event, when the species achieves transcendence through its technological advances. Now the creatures known as humans are near this momentous turning point.

But an armed threat is approaching from deepest space, determined to prevent humankind from crossing over that boundary—by total annihilation if necessary.

To the Sh'daar, the driving technologies of transcendent change are anathema and must be obliterated from the universe—along with those who would employ them. As their great warships destroy everything in their path en route to the Sol system, the human Confederation government falls into dangerous disarray. There is but one hope, and it rests with a rogue Navy Admiral, commander of the kilometer-long star carrier America, as he leads his courageous fighters deep into enemy space towards humankind's greatest conflict—and quite possibly its last.

User Reviews about Earth Strike: Star Carrier: Book One

I was looking for a sci fi military adventure and this book caught my attention. It is the first in a series about a war between humans and an aeons old civilization called the Sh'daar. Earth is a threat to domination of the galaxy by the aliens - and must be destroyed! But humanity turns out to have plenty of smarts, not to mention the super star carrier America. Can the humans survive the onslaught with guts, fancy fighters and loads (and loads) of sand? Read this enjoyable book and find out! P.S. I wasn't kidding about the sand. -- Heavens to Neptune!
Ian Douglas has done his usual good job of weaving a great adventure. I was a little hesitant when I caught on it was about the Navy not the Marines as all his other books have been. While I miss the long Marine heritage in his first 3 trilogies this book looks like it will continue the heritage with a new line devoted to the Navy. I really enjoy how he continued the timeline of the previous series. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. -- Another Great Adventure
This book had a number of serious turn-offs for me: (1) the insipid political correctness reflected in the above quote (from page 152 and echoed in later pages); (2) the incredibly tough female fighter pilot who we've only seen in, gosh, about 300 previous books and movies; (3) the stock dialogue that we've also seen about 300 times before (for example, after the battle, at page 341: "We weren't going to let you have all the fun to yourselves.") (4) the psychiatric leave taken by the main character in the midst of a battle zone; and (5) the lack of any character who there was reason to care about.

That said, the battles have a number of strong points. If you've liked this author before, you will probably like him again here. For myself, I much prefer the "Dauntless" series by Jack Campbell. -- "Not all Muslims are fanatics, Lieutenant"
I enjoyed the book, it was an easy read. But I got hung up on some discrepancies. If you can accelerate at 50,000g nobody is going to care about 600 kilometers per hour. If a rail gun gave 300g acceleration it would be useless in space, the shots would barely fall out of the barrel. In thse and other areas the numbers just don't add up.

But if you don't read carefully and don't have a mathematical or scientific bent then you will probably have no problem enjoying this story,

The ending was a bit "and then, as if by magic, rocks fall, everybody dies". Kind of trite. -- Good, but needs some technical editing
